What is a Percentage?
A percentage (from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred") is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is denoted using the percent sign (%).
Percentages allow us to standardize proportions and compare parts to wholes regardless of total scale. For instance, scoring 45 out of 50 in an exam and 90 out of 100 both represent 90%, making performance comparison straightforward.
Percentage Formulas & How to Calculate Them
Here are the standard formulas implemented in our online calculator for each calculation mode:
1. Find the Percentage of a Number (P% of X)
To find P% of a total number X, convert the percentage into a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by the total:
Formula: Result = (P ÷ 100) × X
Example: What is 15% of $240?
- Step 1: Convert percentage to decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Step 2: Multiply by total: 0.15 × 240 = 36
2. Find What Percentage One Number is of Another (X is what % of Y?)
To find out what percentage a part X represents out of a whole Y, divide X by Y and multiply by 100:
Formula: Percentage (%) = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100
Example: If you scored 45 marks out of a total 180 marks:
- Step 1: Divide part by whole: 45 ÷ 180 = 0.25
- Step 2: Multiply by 100: 0.25 × 100 = 25%
3. Percentage Change (Increase or Decrease)
To find the percentage change from an original value (V₁) to a new value (V₂):
Formula: Percentage Change (%) = ((V₂ - V₁) ÷ |V₁|) × 100
- If the result is positive (+), it is a percentage increase.
- If the result is negative (-), it is a percentage decrease.
Example: An item's price increases from $80 to $120:
- Step 1: Calculate the difference: 120 - 80 = +40
- Step 2: Divide by original value: 40 ÷ 80 = 0.50
- Step 3: Multiply by 100: 0.50 × 100 = +50% increase
4. Percentage Addition / Deduction (X ± P%)
Often used for calculating sales tax, GST, restaurant tips, or store discounts:
Formulas:
- Add Percentage (Tax / Markup): Final = X × (1 + P ÷ 100)
- Subtract Percentage (Discount): Final = X × (1 - P ÷ 100)
Example: A product costs $500 with 18% GST added:
- Step 1: Calculate 18% of $500 = 500 × 0.18 = $90
- Step 2: Add to original amount: $500 + $90 = $590
5. Reverse Percentage (X is P% of what?)
If you know the value after a percentage applies or know a portion and want to find the original total (100%):
Formula: Original Total = Part ÷ (P ÷ 100)
Example: A student scored 60 points, which is 20% of the total exam marks. What is the total?
- Step 1: Convert 20% to decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.20
- Step 2: Divide known score by decimal: 60 ÷ 0.20 = 300 total marks

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the easiest way to calculate percentages in your head?
For quick mental math, use the 10% rule:
- To find 10% of any number, move the decimal point one place to the left (e.g., 10% of 250 is 25).
- To find 5%, take half of your 10% value (half of 25 is 12.5).
- To find 20%, double your 10% value (25 × 2 = 50).
- To find 1%, move the decimal point two places to the left (1% of 250 is 2.5).
Is percentage increase the same as percentage difference?
No. Percentage increase compares a new value to an original starting base value: ((New - Old) ÷ Old) × 100. Percentage difference is used when comparing two values without an inherent starting point, dividing the absolute difference by the average of the two numbers.
Can a percentage be greater than 100%?
Yes. When a quantity is more than the base or reference amount, it exceeds 100%. For example, if revenue increases from $100 to $300, the new revenue is 300% of the initial revenue, which represents a 200% increase.
Can percentages be negative?
Yes. A negative percentage change indicates a decrease or loss. For example, a drop in stock price from $100 to $75 represents a -25% decrease.
